Model History
The origin of the 3100 Open can be traced back to the very beginning of Tiara Yachts. In 1979, Leon Slikkers introduced the very first Tiara, a 3100 Open and with it, a new cross-over segment of the market was born. What was unique about the 3100 was, until that time, twin inboard boats of this size were either fishing boats or cruising boats. Tiara decided to blend the best of both breeds and offered a boat with a large cockpit that was perfectly suited for fishing (with factory options) or it could be setup for cruising with different available options. Whichever way the cockpit was arranged, the cabin remained spacious and comfortable. The introduction of the 3100 Open was a huge success and Tiara born. Another important aspect of the Tiara product has always been quality. This manufacturer has a reputation for producing some of the finest boats of there kind in the world. While not an inexpensive product (few quality items are), Tiara has become a benchmark in the industry for design, innovation and attention to detail. The original 3100 Open was produced for a remarkable 12 years with only minor changes until 1991, when a new 3100 was introduced. The second generation boat, while similar in looks, underwent a major redesign. Her new bottom design, with more deadrise, revised chines and shallow prop tunnels, made for a more comfortable and dry ride. On deck, new seating options were offered, the cockpit was lowered and the helm deck raised resulting in a step-up from the cockpit to the helm area and a transom door with tuna gate was added. As for the interior, while the arrangement didn't change, many refinements were made along with numerous upgrades to joiner work and soft goods. The 3100 remained in production until 2004, when the boat was replaced by an all new 3200 Open.
Construction
Tiara uses premium polyester and vinylester resins along with the finest in E-glass knitted fiberglass cloth in the layup of their products. The 3100's hull is solid fiberglass below the waterline and is cored with Baltek balsa core in the hull sides above the waterline. The hull has 19 degrees of deadrise at the transom and features two running strakes, reversed chines and shallow prop tunnels. The stringers are a grid system design made of hand-laid fiberglass and cored with marine grade plywood. The deck layup is similar to the hull's but with balsa coring used to stiffen the walking areas of the deck. The hull to deck joint is a "shoe box" style that is chemically and mechanically fastened and is covered with a stainless steel rub rail. The entire boat is hand-laid to the highest standards.
Vessel Walk Thru
From the centerline companionway, you proceed down three steps into the cabin. To starboard is the large U-shaped settee/dinette, which converts in a double berth. Opposite on port is the galley with all needed appliances. Aft of the galley is the head with full fiberglass liner. An offset double berth is in the bow and features a drop-in insert and large hinged storage area beneath the berth. A hanging locker is found on port between the galley and berth.
Salon
The interior of the 3100 is beautifully finished in rich teak wood solids and veneers. The cabin sole is solid 3/8" thick teak and maple with tongue and groove joints. With the extremely low hours on this boat, the condition of the interior is exceptional, showing no signs of use or wear. All soft goods are in a "like new" condition. The large U-shaped settee has a teak table and will comfortably seat four. The table is used to convert the settee into a double berth with the addition of two filler cushions. Additional storage is found beneath the seating and in overhead storage lockers.

The main berth in the boat is located in the bow. It is an offset double berth with the optional filler cushion, which adds about 15% more surface area to the berth. There is outstanding storage in the area via a large hinged locker, which hydraulic assist, under the aft end of the berth and another large area at the forward end of the berth. A full privacy curtain gives good separation between the berth and the settee.

Cockpit
This cockpit is large and open, just what your are looking for when fishing. There is a large in-sole fishbox and live-well, which are plumbed to a Macerator for overboard discharge. These boxes are removable for access to the lazarette. "Island Gem" does have the factory bait-prep station, along with the swim platform and recessed ladder. The transom door allows easy access to the water and features a hinged "tuna gate", for those really large catches. Large stern scuppers do a great job at evacuating water from the area. What fishing boat would be complete without a set of double spreader Lee outrigger, which do have the drop down rear legs, in order to lower the riggers for bridges.

Marlin Tower
Custom Marine Components of Jacksonville, FL. designed and built this fine marlin tower for "Island Gem". The upper helm station is accessed via ladders port or starboard. At the top of each built-in ladder, there is a half-moon recess in the aluminum tubing, allowing for easier access to the bridge. The upper station has a fiberglass pod housing steering, shifters and throttles. A raised bench seat and lower flip-out seat give sound and secure seating options while in the tower. The large "half tower" aluminum and canvas top which covers the helm area and has recently been renewed.

Broker Comments
With 20 years of boat sales experience (and 3 years as a Tiara dealer), it is my strong belief that Tiara Yachts makes some of the finest boats of their type in the world. The 3100 Open model and "Island Gem" in particular, are outstanding examples of the engineering and craftsmanship that makes Tiara a true benchmark for the industry. This very low hour original one-owner boat has been dry stored from day one and is excellent condition. New canvas was installed in October of 2010. Her interior is all but unused and shows very close to new. While not the least expensive 3100 on the market, this boat does offer great options, outstanding condition and almost no hours. If you are in the market for a 3100 to fish, the marlin tower is a must have feature. The 3100 Open is a true classic which will be an enduring value for many years to come.
