Johnson and Prowler are names synonymous with the finest custom and semi-custom boats of the day. The Prowlers were built from the 1930's to the 1970's in Miami on the Miami River. Each boat was made to order and Forest Johnson oversaw the construction of every one. In fact, Mr. Johnson sea trailed each boat and no boat left the factory until he said she was ready. This care and attention to detail is what makes every Prowler special. "Cattin Around" is one of those special boats. Built in 1970, she is said to be the last wooden Prowler and the only 38' known to have been made. The original owner was a lady by the name of Dr. Martille Turner who had previously owned two smaller Prowlers. Mike Matlack, who now builds the Gamefisherman Boats in Stuart, FL., was the second owner. In fact, the classic and proud lines of the Prowler are not dissimilar to Mike's new classic. Mike sold the boat to another well known fisherman, Tred Barta. Tred owned the boat for a number of years and then sold her to an owner out of Wrightsville Beach, NC, before she was then sold to her current owner. The current owner grew up in the Miami area in Prowler's heydays. His fond memories of these boat as a child, fueled his passion to lovingly restore "Cattin Around" into a one-of-a-kind classic. Restoration A two year, full restoration, was completed by Lamb's Yacht Corporation in Jacksonville, FL. at the beginning of 2003. Every aspect of the boat was evaluated before the refit began. First the structure was examined from the garboard plank to flybridge. The boat was found to have been wholly sound and while needing some woodwork, the hull structure was found to be in excellent overall condition for it's age. Any suspect wood or fasteners were replaced and the entire structure from top to bottom was wrapped in fiberglass and epoxy. In order to seal the interior of the hull, the bilges were coated in gray epoxy. Mechanically, virtually all the systems were replaced with new. From the engines and the generator, to the air conditioning system, steering and plumbing, all were replaced with new equipment. Electrically, all wiring (AC & DC) was replaced and a new AC electrical panel and new DC electrical panels were custom made. Modern electronics by Furuno were added and make navigation a breeze. The interior has been kept in it's original configuration, however every surface and all soft goods have been renewed. The exterior was finished in an off-white Awlgrip finish and the mahogany brightwork is finished in a polyurethane varnish. The new teak cockpit has been added and left in a natural finish. The restoration of "Cattin Around" has taken the level of fit and finish this Prowler well beyond her original factory new condition. Since the completion of the refit, the owner has diligently maintained the condition of the vessel to a very high level. Construction The vessel is constructed entirely of wood with the exterior areas of the hull, decks and superstructure (except the cockpit) covered in fiberglass & epoxy. The hull is longitudinally planked in ceder with battens on the plank seams. It is reinforced with 1 1/4" x 4" transverse frames on approximately 12" centers; four 2 1/2" wide longitudinal frames of variable height that also support the main engines, keel, chine boards and three continuous plywood transverse bulkheads along with various other partial bulkheads and partitions that lend support to the vessel's overall structure. The superstructure is constructed of plywood and sold mahogany supported by mahogany frames and carlins. All the interior structural wood has been painted or epoxy coated to protect the wood from fuzz and moisture damage. Vessel Walk Thru "Cattin' Around" features an open deckhouse which means there is not a solid aft bulkhead at the aft end of the salon. This classic sport fisherman design creates a wonderful open feeling on deck and allows everyone aboard to be part of the action when fishing. The salon does have a 3 piece canvas curtain so that the area can be fully enclosed when needed. The salon is arranged with a large lounge aft on starboard and a slightly smaller lounge opposite on port. Beneath the lounges are the Crusader engines while the generator is located between the engines beneath the sole in an additional mechanical space. Forward on starboard is the U-shaped galley while the dinette is forward on port. At the front of the salon is a companionway leading down to the sleeping accommodations and head. This forward cabin area features a large settee to port which converts to a Pullman style berth; a V-berth is at the bow with hanging lockers, while aft is the head with shower aft to starboard. The interior is finished in an off-white Awlgrip paint with beautiful varnished mahogany trim throughout. The soles are covered in traditional cork which have been sealed in a polyurethane finish for durability. The condition of the interior and the soft goods is outstanding. Salon The salon area features a soft aft bulkhead, which enables one to dramatically expand the cockpit area. With the aft curtains in place, the salon feels every bit as enclosed as if there was an aft bulkhead. The space is air conditioned, has a full galley, large dinette and two aft settees. There are plenty of light through numerous windows, most of which will open. The salon is beautifully finished in off-white Awlgrip paint with plenty of varnished mahogany trim. The sole is covered in cork with has been sealed for superior durability. Her cockpit measures 10.5' long and 8' wide giving 84 sq. ft. of room to fish. Keep in mind that there is no hard aft bulkhead at the end of the salon, so with the aft salon enclosure removed, the cockpit feels very large. The aft salon seating becomes the forward cockpit seating while fishing. The sole has been completely refitted with a new teak deck. There are flip-up mahogany fighting seats port and starboard and a custom rocket launcher / fighting station in the center. Cleats are recessed under the gunwales in order to provide a snag-free stern area for fishing lines. The forward seating area is accessed by a small gate forward of the seat to starboard of the helm. The full width forward settee will seat 4 comfortable. There are 3 storage lockers beneath the seat and another locker forward with cup holders. The engine gauges are recessed in the mahogany dash and have the traditional glass cover with aluminum frame. The owner is a passionate and proud owner who has spared no expense in the refit and care of this vessel. In order to make the boat more practical to care for and both safer and easier to use, modern upgrades like the Crusader engines, Westerbeke generator, electrical system, electronics and fiberglass covering. However for the most part, the owner has kept the boat as authentic as is possible. If Forest E. Johnson was alive today, I am confident he would be proud that the Prowler logo is still displayed prominently on the hull of "Cattin Around". If you have dreamed of owning a restored one-of-a-kind classic sport fisherman, you must see this boat.
